The context of colour

The context of colour is especially important to me as I want the viewer to feel the mood I have intended to create- I realised how dramatic the effects are in terms of changing the background colour to the main focus point.. for example below there are four red squares with four different coloured backgrounds.

The red appears a lot more dominant against the black and white background, although more so with the black background. The red is almost lifeless with the orange background as the two colours appear to clash- to me it just is very unpleasing and confusing for the eye to look at. The red appears brilliant against the blue background.
