Documenting Environments

WHAT IS IT?

Documentary photography is a narrative or a story which is told through photographs. This involves real events being photographed to provide a factual record or report.
The word ' document' itself means 'evidence' which is therefore trusted which assumes a bond between the viewer and image which means it is charged with showing the world as it really is.
Documentary photography has always been powerful, in terms of shocking or informing the viewer, or to change their opinion, or even to persuade.
Its interesting looking back onto the history of when documentary photography first began. Early documentation often was for documenting criminals to show their identification.
Henri Cartier- Bresson is known for being the 'father of photojournalism' as well as street photography. His work creates a array of emotions for the viewer as his images portray real life, his images are very decisive.
I began to look at some other well-known photographers who focused more on landscapes such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Annie Leibovitz and Bill Brandt.
