My first prints

I think this one could be a potential final shot, I just like how the composition is unequal, and how the window I took the shot through is dirty; giving off different textures. Also theres a sense of movement to the photo with the man captured during mid-walking.

I like this shot because of the expression on his face, however, I don't think it would be suitable regarding the genre 'street'.

I was pleased with this print, particularly the shadows created, and the people casually stood at the bus stop. I like how when I look into the photo I look to the centre; at the empty street. The shot has quite a peaceful mood to it, with no one walking the streets, just waiting for their bus patiently.

This shot I like because you can see the expressions on the people's faces, however, It looks too posed and not natural.

I think this shot is really cute, only because there is two old couple sat chilling on a bench in the sun, reflecting on their lives or maybe killing time, no one knows. I like how I took the shot through a railing, giving off a sense of being trapped; which is like getting old, there is no way of getting out of it.
The contrast is a little too dark as I think it reflects a negative mood to the shot.

Again, this shot is all about shadows and a sense of movement from the busy pace of Street Life, I don't  like how all of the people are walking away and you can't see faces. The image I think isn't very interesting, however, I like the lighting.

This photograph, is also maybe going to be one of my final prints. If I had to name this shot I'd name is "Bus stop faces", before I began this project I didn't take notice of people in the street as much, as I was always too busy doing my own thing. However, I think its fascinating going past bus stops and seeing peoples faces - normally miserable I have found; looking fatigued and bored.

This print has come out a too dark, and the top half too light. Needs re-printing, however I don't really like the shot anyway- except the females face.

Again, this shot looks too posed - as you can see the subject is sort of smiling, but I do like it, I like the dark contrast, I think it makes the image more deep and the figure stand out.

This shot- I like how the man was moving past the camera fast when I shot this, with the rest of the picture in focus. For me this photo (taken in York) portrays day-to-day street life and I am considering it for a final shot.
I took this whilst waiting to cross the road, noticing people stood waiting to cross I took a quick shot, the print has come out quite dark, and even darker from the scanner.

I don't really like this photograph. However, I like how the print turned out and the shadows of the bus and woman's figure.

Contact sheets

2 of my film rolls turned out unsuccessful - one of them due to me not loading the film correctly, and the other was underexposed as the film came out too dark.

Alfred Eisenstaedt

After looking at a lot of Alfred Eisenstaedt's work, I took particular interest in this shot. After looking at posed photos that he had took of dancers and Marilyn Monroe I found that this has something else to it. Not everyday where I live do you see eight Jewish men walking down a street holding books underneath their left arms. The contrast of their dark outfits to the light background creates a dramatic effect, enhancing the males' silhouettes.

Robert Capa

“If your photos aren’t good enough, then you’re not close enough” – Robert Capa

After getting a better insight of Street Photographers and their work, I feel inspired and influenced. However, I need to take the quote above quite literally; I need to learn to get amongst Street Life so i am able to take better close up shots, and be less anxious. Hopefully tomorrow I will succeed in getting some better close up shots of people in York.

Elliott Erwitt

This photograph was taken in Holland, Amsterdam 1972 by Elliott Erwitt. The reason why I took particular interest to this photograph is because it made me laugh. The large pointing hand towards the man creates an ironic impression as the man is picking his nose in the photo. However, the large hand is pointing to 'INGANG ON DE HOEK' which means 'ENTRANCE AROUND THE CORNER'. The photographs contrasting black and white colours exaggerate the shadows in the window and the male's figure against the light floor colour and darker background.

New York, Brooklyn 2011

This photograph was taken in October of 2011, whilst on a college trip to New York. The photograph relates to my Street Photography brief. The lamp post above the man's head is distracting to the shot, this is what makes me feel unsatisfied with the photograph however this could be humorous.

Lee Friedlander

Lee Friedlander, Las Vagas, Nevada, 2007. I like how the photograph conveys what has been (the reflection in the mirror of the car) and the presence/what could be ahead. (Hot babes!!)

This shot was taken on my way out of Greatham, reminds me of Friedlander's car shots.

Inspiration

Watching 'Enter the void', a psychedelic melodrama. I want to photograph the neon-lit nightclub environments of Tokyo!

Julien Legrand

I also like this shot taken by Julien Legrand for his street photography genre, mainly because of the beauty of graffiti. I like how religious connotations come into the shot as to me it appears to be a woman holding onto flowers, dressed in sheets. The graffiti that was used to ruin the beautiful woman actually becomes beautiful when the photo is taken as a whole. I think the composition is really good aswel, as it drew my eyes to the centre of the shot.

Julien Legrand

Julien Legrand

I took particular interest in this shot by Julien Legrand because of the shadow contrast, the light shining down on the stairs highlights the people in the shot and the shadows behind them. I think the contrast is quite dramatic, the mood of the shot is quite calm and still as the people in the image appear calm and relaxed by the way they are sitting
